My work story

  • The genesis of my work story is dicey. After dropping out of school 🫣 I joined my state’s Job Corps program, picked up an office occupations trade, and earned my GED (true story). This training made extra gravy at the keyboard and 10-key.
  • After Job Corps, I spend a few months refurbishing pagers for (now defunct) Arch Wireless/PageNet. After being passed up for promotion, I enlisted with the US Navy! My work was related to surface and aviation logistics. Saw a portion of the world on my deployments! 🫡 Ended my enlistment honorably.
  • With my military service complete, I entered the civilian work force & the technology industry. I was hired at an MSP, to help admin their global monitoring systems (I held a second job at a nearby country club (providing damn good service at weddings) so I could afford my mortgage! I picked up industry certs from Microsoft, Cisco, & started getting the itch to manage network devices.
  • Next, I took a contract at a bank that needed bilingual network engineers to troubleshoot datacenter and financial networks. The combination of MSP systems administration & network ops steered me right into converged infrastructure (does anyone remember the VCE (VMware Cisco EMC consortium?). I learned the NX-OS platform and moved on to the next thing. I was hired as the first network guy in Americas supporting networking for converged infrastructure platform (the VCE Vblock 300-700). At the time, my peers were storage array gurus out of the Boston EMC office.
  • VCE job rounded out my skill set and provided me a path to VMware to work on the early software-defined clouds, and ultimately with the technology that became VMware HCX (a powerful consumption enabler with robust workload and network mobility capabilities).

On the home front. I married an beautiful, incredible woman (she is a homeschooled mom of 6, with a Ph.D. & J.D.). She gave birth to four gorgeous kiddos. we adopted two more). Our home is chaotic, but crazy full of happy.

vcfcore.tech and hcx.design are my personal blogging projects, for sharing useful creative content with my personal flavor at my own pace (unleashed). If you’re feeling magnificent and want to send love for what I do here, you can buy me a coffee☕️.
I hope you enjoy what I’m doing with this blog.
